Further Progress

In my ongoing quest to figure out how to let the Salon Weblog server know that former Salon Weblogs no longer using Radio UserLand (which, it turns out, was developed by just the sort of lunatic you’d expect) have been updated, I’ve been able to confirm what Christian mentioned in a comment. It is indeed possible to ping the Salon Weblog server directly from within WordPress and Movable Type when posting an entry (and if posting this entry is noted, that means I’ve gotten it to work). And though TypePad doesn’t support this directly, there does seem to be a workaround.

Assuming that this does in fact work for me in WordPress, I’ll e-mail those I know who are using TypePad with details for their process. For those of you using other Weblog software, I’ll continue to work on a Java application that can be used to manually notify the Salon server of updates.

  1. I think you may be right. When the Salon server receives a ping, it goes to the Weblog about which it has been notified to see if it has been updated. I suspect that Blogger Weblogs don’t respond appropriately to that inquiry. Because Blogger doesn’t offer TrackBack and similar services, my guess is that it lacks the necessary XML-RPC infrastructure.

  2. It only works if your Weblog has actually been updated. The Salon server checks to see if your Weblog has been updated before it adds it to the recently changed page. It doesn’t look like yours has been updated. Try it next time you post a new entry, and it should work then.

  3. Hmmm… How quickly did you try the four times? It can take 5 or 10 minutes for the update to show up on the Salon page, and if you ping multiple times while you’re waiting, I think your update may actually be excluded. But in the meantime, I’m still working on the manual means, so I’ll keep you posted.

  4. Thanks for the email, Morgan, & the continuing efforts. My digital doorbell for the Salon updates is working fine thus far & I’m very pleased that we’re able to go in via the front door with full approval. Good for Salon.
